How to Time a Move Between Rental Apartments?
When should I start searching for an apartment?
There’s no reason you can’t start looking at new apartments as soon as you know you’re ready to move! Some apartments have waitlists, so it is important to make sure you tour and apply quickly.
Typically, the average person knows they won’t be renewing their lease at least two months in advance. Once that is known, you can begin seriously touring apartments to find your perfect fit. Once you tour all available properties, you can submit your application to secure your spot.
Should my lease overlap?
Let’s face it: no one wants to pay rent for two units at the same time. In fact, the idea of paying rent on two apartments sounds terrible. If you can manage to overlap your leases for one day, that is the easiest and cheapest. However, finding the time and help to move all of your belongings in that short amount of time can be daunting.
If you want more wiggle room before moving day, we recommend a week of overlap. Most property management companies will allow prorated rent, and you can take advantage of having extra time to start packing and cleaning your old apartment before moving day.
When is moving season/the best time to move?
Most consider the summer months the best time of the year to move. However, because of this, it is also when the demand for moving companies, movers, and moving trucks is highest.
As a result, if you want to keep costs a little lower and can manage to wait, we recommend moving in the fall or late spring months. You will often be able to find lower rental rates when it comes to moving equipment. Plus, you can avoid the blazing summer heat!
However, we understand that moving during the fall/spring is not always possible. Many people will plan their moves around the school year, which means the summer months may be easiest. Also, because of this, there may be more apartments available as former tenants relocate.
Setting a moving date on the weekend is ideal for most, but if you can manage to take a day off to move it may make it easier! There will be less foot traffic in and out of your apartment during the week and you may have an easier chance of renting equipment if needed. If you move on the weekend, you may be able to have more help from friends and family depending on your situation. Start as early as you can to get everything that you need accomplished!
